The “amnesty clause,” in short, will allow NBA teams a chance to correct a single wrong each year that they’ve made in the free agency market the previous year.
For instance, if your team picked up someone with a big contract (aka Gilbert Arenas and the Magic), they are allowed to release that player via amnesty and shed the player’s contract off the books (while still having to pay the player what’s owed). This measure will thereby allow some luxury-tax relief for teams.
On the other end, though, I can’t help but wonder if it will make those players who are “victim” to the clause feel like they’re labeled as big mistakes.
